Riverside is a beautiful city situated right beside the Santa Ana River. It is the County seat for Riverside County and is the largest city in the Ontario - San Bernardino - Riverside area of Southern California and the 4th largest city inland after Fresno, Sacramento, and Bakersfield. The city currently hosts a population of approximately 300 430 people in its area of 78 square miles. Its is conveniently located 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
The University of California, Riverside is located in the city and is home to over 40 acres of rare and unique plants. As well, there is an abundance of walking paths to enjoy the scenic routes through the garden.
Riverside is home to the first Navel Orange Trees in North America. They were first introduced to the area in 1873 by the first settlers from Brazil. There are currently three surviving Parent Navel Orange Trees left. All oranges grown in the west coast are descended from these trees.
Originally, the economy consisted of primarily agriculture. Over the years, it has become more and more dependent on government, education, manufacture, and retail sectors. Luckily, the city has a large amount of affordable land space available, which makes it desirable for companies to build there. There is also a variety of housing for a reasonable price.
Riverside is currently one of the best places to start a business and retains the number one rank in a variety of economic measures (out of 53 cities), including the total amount of jobs as well as the largest amount of businesses.
The city is currently concentration of expanding their technology sector and is developing high tech business parks. The entire County resides within the 856 acre Riverside Regional Tech Park, which offers high speed fiber optic telecommunications systems. These systems rely information quickly and reliably through voice, video and data transmissions.
Several companies have chosen to build their headquarters here, including Luminex Software Inc, Centrum Analytical labs, and Bourns Engineering and I/O Software.
The industrial and manufacturing sectors are rapidly growing and have attracted over 125 industrial employers in the last ten years. DHL, a 18.6 billion dollar shipping company, chose to establish itself in Riverside. It is using the March Air Reserve Case as its west coast hub. Some of the more successful businesses in the light manufacturing sector are electrical instruments, fabrication, food processing, glass, metal, plastics, recreational vehicles, imaging equipment, and wood. As the population grows, the retail industry grows as well.
